Just had a very interesting and educational experience. Son's pony (the one with the fat leg) has mud fever, not a sprain, so was getting depocillan (sp?) for the infection. Shortly after getting his jab, he got very itchy, started bucking, rearing, kicking and generally acting like he was covered in ants! Rang back the vet (luckily a friend who lives near by) and said we thought he was having a reaction. Vet shot back around to us and couldn't believe his eyes! Pony covered in tiny bumps! Gave a shot of antihistamine and started to settle down again. Said he had never seen anything quite like it, and had given hundreds if not thousands of penicillan shots to horses over the years. Got out camera to take pics - was so interesting! Poor pony :) So, no more penicillan for him - hope he eats trimsulph powder! The things we deal with with horses!!! Never a dull moment :)

We have a mare here who actually fell to the ground fitting after a shot of antibiotics, no idea which one etc as it happened while she was in Napier on lease. The lady leasing her rang in a panic as the vet Had no idea what caused It either

Never forget a mare we had being given one by the vet, He asked if we could give them and we said yes. He told us what to look for in a reaction but said it was extremely rare. gave the jab then his phone rang so he answered the call and was talking, next thing horse throws her head and neck up higher and higher, I crouched down and held the lead to the side cuase I could see she was going to throw herself over backwards and managed to get her onto her side rather then flipping over backwards when she reared. Vet ended his call rather quickly! She shook/spasmd a few seconds then went still, shortly after she got up and started eating.

Did the vet draw back the needle when he jabbed pony BEFORE the PEN was administered?? I have seen a horse literaly fall off the end of a penicillin needle as it had been administered into the bloodstream insted of the muscle. Maybe this was the case??

What do the "boys" look like Kristina? Pool boy's or Westies?

Westies. Greasy hair, leather vests, black jeans, jandals, hipflask of JDs in their back pocket and you'll hear their Valiant about 1km from your house. Be afraid.

They sound sexy Kristina. For sure send them over. And I will have you know Kim that I have a dam which is actually far more trendy that a pool.

So then is it a bad look to tell you I kind of like the Duelling Banjos scene from Deliverance? I'm sure I should be living in the Ville. We don't have a pool but have a creek full of eels, is that trendy too?

Thought I might share around now... have been quite excited lately as I brought another horse :) Since Alex has been deemed retired now, I have brought his replacement :) Lou is probably the most excited about it, as it is one she has bred. He is 1/4 irish and by TF Hamish :) Quite exciting having a new one to play with :)

I had my horse shod yesterday. Farrier noticed he had two tiny abscesses in his hind hooves. He wasn't lame at all. Farrier said he would have gone lame over weekend so he dug them out and drained them. Of course today two days before our show he goes lame. I was pretty annoyed i have to say. Farrier is coming tomorrow to see what he can do. We are both pretty confused as to why he is suddenly lame now. My only thought was perhaps even tho he opened it up some bugs got in and made him sore today? He's only lame at the trot. Am hoping tomorrow he will be magically feeling better. Wishful thinking. Have spent weeks preparing for this show, cleaning gear, packing everything up, organizing. Been riding even though i have damaged disk in my back. He reckons he is sore! Blimin sook!

Everytime I tubbed and pouliced and released an abscess my horse would go lame again in the same foot. I started thinking it must be something more sinister, but he finished up blowing out four abscesses in the one foot. He is new to me and he arrived lame so I was thinking what have I got, but he is fine now.

Abscesses in two feet for my wussie TB mare. Wouldn't let vet relieve the pressure on one of her feet but we managed to get a bute injection into her. My 25 year old appy stoically let his get cut out and is now booted. A macho guy in his pink vetwrap bandage! I managed to shift both to a drier paddock but boy do I hate wet ground and abscesses. GRRRR
