Emma I've been in the same predicament with a horse I sold owner would not listen to a single thing I told her. Was very heartbreaking to watch.

Best way to get 4th on a typical H gear box is to drop it out of 5th, let go of the gear stick and it will go naturally to the middle and then pull straight down. :-) Albany hill is a bit of a beartch of a hill!!!!

  Nic   Auckland  10:00AM    10-Sep-10
Jessie mine doesn't get up any decent hills in 5th either! Once it starts to struggle I change down and then just have to be aware that while its generally quite happy going up in 4th, I can't rev it up and then change up again if its still steep. They are slow but steady beasts, not speed machines. But you should be able to get up most of the local hills in 4th quite happily if you aren't towing. Revs are allowed to be a tad higher than what you would normally drive with if your going uphill and know you can't change up because it won't have enough power!

Also for mine I generally run it at around 2500 revs, will hit 3000 in 4th going up the Albany hill though. Its a diesel, they are fine to run at higher revs for a period of time, its what they are designed for!

Re-read that and Nic's right, although 3000rpm isn't what I would call 'high' - if you're cranking it out at 5000rpm that would be too much. Should sit at about that going up hill and maybe the o/drive will kick in to about 3500, as they're designed to run at lower revs and quietly grind their way up hills and so on. That's why they have lower torque than say a normal sedan. They're designed to take a heavier engine load and work at lower revs for longer periods. The Bighorn diesel motor is the same motor that runs the refrigeration units on shipping containers so are designed to run at low, even revs for literally miles and miles and miles. 5th to 2nd is OK, I do it in a car all the time, but in a diesel a bit harder due to the revs. You'd do better to learn double-clutching to keep the revs up between changes if you find you're losing your revs. It's an art, but you will need to learn to go a bit slower and stop riding the clutch, you'll burn it out!!

I owned and towed with a bighorn for years and it sux!!! They are completely gutless.....I would do about 50-80 up any hills! Hated it!

My older bighorn (92 model) used to struggle a bit around Dairy Flat etc (and I used to also hate albay hill in it), however it wasn't much different whether towing a horse or not lol. My newer model (99) is more speedier as it were (and definitely tows better). The first time driving up Albany hill in my "new" bighorn was sooo much better I think I actually did laughed out loud. Of course after I bought it I moved to Canterbury where it is nice and flat :D My friends Prado which age wise is a mid 90's definitely has more pep as it were for non towing performance, towing they seem feel about the same. However, the Prado was probably 25% more expensive than my Bighorn to buy and I don't think it is 25% better to drive.

Yes, thankyou every one for being there. Even though I'm not in the middle of it all, it's still good to know that there are caring boardies ready to listen in the middle of the night. ((hugs)) to all Christchurch boardies.

I just wish I could help and fix the sleep deprivation - I know how emotional and on edge I get when sleep deprived - I can only guess at how bad it is when you are facing constant uncertainty over when it will next shake and whether or not is will be another big one. :-(

Rach are you going to come out to Flaxton on sunday with Erin? I can understand if you don't feel up to it - but it might be a bit of light relief after such a serious week :)

Thanks everyone. I took Connie's advice and plugged in a few lat/long numbers and am really surprised at how inaccurate Geonets basic description of the location is! For example one of the Darfield ones was across the other side of the Waimak from Darfield just by Tram Road!! Why can't they call that Ohoka?

  connie   Manawatu  10:43AM    10-Sep-10
I think that they take reference from the quake drums which show the most action. Hence the weird location details and why the lat/long works so well.

Platinum Stud Girth, black, 120cm. Used once but unfortunately a tad short (I thought I could get away with it but really is a struggle to do up on larger horse!). A very nice stud girth and way cheaper than most. See Tackshop website to see what it looks like. $100. Also black Trainer Jessica Dressage Saddle, 17 1/2 inch, W, changeable gullet, minimal use, bought new. Looking for around $1800. Jannine.rackley@carters.co.nz

Dispersal sale. A selection of broodmares (all TB's)and youngstock (all by Airthrey Highlander) available. Major shift in focus means I am winding down the breeding side of the business. Highlander will still be available for service to outside mares. Prices vary and negotiable, but the best of homes are required.

Those horses are just in the holding yards and as said above have probably just come off the truck or put in yards just to get soem close up pics, Gary does his best to find homes for the good ones, tis sad when these perfectly good horses get sent to the works especially when the actual works dealer is the one with enough conscience to at least TRY and find homes for them....

We are heading up tomorrow hopefully to pick up a heavily infoal mare. I would love to fill the truck but I put my grown up hat on. Of course nothing is set in stone so maybe I will end up with a yearling too. Just have to be sensible. I have heaps of grass now but summer is a different ball game.
